Weight gain in Pregnancy

In pregnancy weight gain is common phenomenon. In early week of pregnancy some times lady may lose weight because of nausea or vomiting.
During subsequent month of pregnancy the weight gain is progressive until the last one week. The total weight gain during entire pregnancy is 10-12kg..During 1-3 months i.e. first trimester one and half kg. and in second trimester 3-6 near about 4kg.approximately,third trimester 2-2and half per month.

The total weight gain at term is distributed as:

1.Reproductive weight gain-6kg it involved weight of fetus, placental, liquor, uterus and breasts.

2.Net maternal weight gain is 6 kg. i.e. increase in blood volume, increase in extra cellular fluid, accumulation of fats and protein.

During pregnancy there is variable amount of retention of electrolytes such as sodium, potassium and chlorides. Sodium is most important because it controls the distribution of water in various parts of body. Water retained during pregnancy is near about 6.5 liters.

Checking of weight in pregnancy is very important it is necessary to identify overweight or underweight patients. Periodic and regular weight checking is of importance to detect abnormality. Weight gain more than 0.5 kg a week or more than 2kg one month indicate pre-eclampsia and need for careful supervision.

If patient weight is not increased and it show decreased in weight then there is one of suggestive feature of intrauterine growth retardation or intrauterine death of fetus.
Nutritional supplements and encouraging the patients to eat more during pregnancy are likely to improve the weight gain. Poor weight gain are related to preclampsia, prematurely, dymaturity and increased perinatal mortality and impairment of effective lactation.
